Company culture is more important than talent

Share

Recruiting top talent in any industry is often seen as a surefire way to improve a company's performance and drive business success. However, if a company's culture is not aligned with the values and goals of its employees, all the top talent in the world may not be enough to foster a healthy and productive work environment.

I have seen this first hand multiple times over the past few years as a recruiter and consultant. Companies that have all the patina of an amazing opportunity for top talent to advance their careers turns out to be a toxic dead end organization.  This is typically attributable to one of two systemic issues.

The first being an apparent lack of company culture.  And by company culture I don’t mean silly awards every month, some contrived team building activities that nobody wants to participate in, or some best place to work award in name that state or county.

The company culture I am referring to is a motivating family environment that makes people want to come to work everyday, be accountable to each other, promotes personal & professional development,  encourages collaboration & accepts mistakes.

People have for a long time believed that this is a red herring.  Company culture is a bi product of the people inside of it not the top down approach of an organization.  In some cases that may be more true than others, however if you follow more recent studies by leaders in organizational leadership you find that this is much more quantifiable than previously thought.

Why does it seem so much more likely to have good company culture in start up companies in their infancy than larger companies?  Is it because they throw better company parties?  They buy nicer office equipment?  No…

It’s because they are typically much more open collaborative environments to work in.  There are more clear goals and objectives.  They are much more open to changing the game plan when needed.  The people are typically wearing multiple hats and open to helping each other.

The most productive people are often also the most open to helping and have the most to share.  I can’t tell how many times I have seen this ruined by leadership that only believes that they have all the answers and there is no need for collaboration.

So what does this mean?

This means that the goal of an organization is to maintain a transparent, collaborative work environment.   This will result in exponentially more productivity in the employees you do have and create a place that will be attractive to the talent that your looking to
